John Jacob Newberry, 62, of Tucson, AZ, formerly of Seneca, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.
A visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 31st at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Seneca. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 1st also at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Fr. Bowan Schmitt officiating. Burial will be St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Ransom. John was born February, 25, 1964, in Oak Park, IL, to Eugene and Louisa (Peters) Newberry. On August 4, 1990, he married Patricia “Patty” Newman of Seneca.
John graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a marketing degree. He was a proud firefighter/paramedic for River Forest Fire Department, retiring in 2016 as a Lieutenant. John was an avid cyclist and hiker, always ready for a new challenge. He also enjoyed cross country skiing, snowshoeing, fishing, and sitting by the campfire. Gathering with family or friends and good food meant a lot to John. He always supported his children and was so proud of their accomplishments. John was a wonderful husband who loved traveling with his wife to enjoy the outdoors and talking to people. His fun-loving spirit will be missed by all who knew him.
He was a member of St. Mark the Evangelist in Oro Valley, AZ and had volunteered with Ottawa’s Salvation Army ringing the bell and St. Vincent de Paul Society in Forest Park. Many of his days were spent clearing hiking trails to show his appreciation for the National Forests.
John is survived his wife, Patty; his children, Jacob (Rose Liston) Newberry and Jacquelyn (Kyle Beres) Newberry; his mother, Louisa Newberry; his siblings, Liz (Lou Ehasz) Newberry, Carolyn (David) Newberry-Schwartz, Tom (Patti) Newberry, and Sam (Barbara Leutz) Newberry; his father-in-law, Joseph Newman; brothers and sisters-in-law, JoAnn (Mark) Teele, Judy (Dave) Both, and Gary Newman; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gene Newberry, mother-in-law, Fannie Lou Newman, and brother-in-law, Larry Newman.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Rails to Trails, American Hiking Society, or any other outdoor organization.
