John James "Jack" Brodbeck, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2025, after a long battle with health issues related to his advanced age of 92. Jack was one day and one month short of his 93rd birthday.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 25 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Marseilles with Father Ryan Mattingly officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery with military honors. Seals-Campbell Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Jack was born on May 11, 1932 in Ottawa, Illinois, and raised in Marseilles, Illinois. He loved his hometown of Marseilles along the Illinois River, where the Brodbeck family has lived since 1885.
Jack's parents were Allen Francis Brodbeck and Irene (Savage) Brodbeck. He was their second son after his brother, Allen, and their sister, Carole Lynn (Simpson). He attended Marseilles schools graduating in 1950 with honors and then went to the University of Illinois where he majored in Chemical Engineering. In 1955, Jack graduated with honors from U. of I. with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering and a Second Lieutenant commission in the U.S. Army (ROTC). After graduation, Jack was hired by Chevron Research Company in Richmond, California (formerly Standard Oil of California).
Jack had an illustrious 38-year career with Chevron, working the last 11 years as Vice-President of Chemicals Research. In 1962, while working at Chevron, Jack earned a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. During his time at Chevron, Jack registered nine patents with the U.S. Patent Office for his research work in petrochemicals. He retired in 1992.
In 1960, Jack married Myrna Lousie Fulton, who survives, a happy marriage that lasted 65 years. Jack and Myrna have three sons: Mark Robert (Jerryll), Kevin John (Lisa), and Kelly James (Lesli), six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Jack loved and cared for his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Towards the end of his life, he especially loved playing with his grandchildren, watching them grow and prosper.
