Mayor James H. "Boots" Trager, 79, of Marseilles, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 6, at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home in Marseilles with Rev. Duane Kaufman officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Marseilles.
Jim was born December 2, 1938, in Ottawa, to Jack and Estaline (Monroe) Trager. In 1961, he married Sandra Faletto of Marseilles, who survives.
He graduated from Marseilles High School in 1956. He attended LPO Jr. College and completed a 4-year manufacturing training program at Caterpillar in Joliet and became a tool designer. He was employed by Caterpillar for 38 years until his retirement.
Jim was elected as a City of Marseilles Public Property Commissioner in 1975 and served for 24 years in this capacity. He was elected Mayor of Marseilles in 2007, serving until 2011 and elected again in 2015, serving until the present. He was president of the E911 Board for 20 years, was a member of the Marseilles Planning Commission from 1998 to 2005 and served on the Manlius Township Planning Commission from 1998 to 2005.
He was a life member of the Marseilles Lions Club for 45 years, where he had served as president, and was currently serving as treasurer and on the Board of Directors.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, serving his community, fishing, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles, golfing, and traveling.
Jim is survived by his wife, Sandy; three children, Marcia (Steve) Machetta of Morris, Laurie Trager of Marseilles, and Shane (Jodi) Trager of Seneca; seven grandchildren, Michael and Marc Machetta, Anthony Caselli, Lesley (Jimmy) Hart, Jaret (Heather) Trager, and Mya and Sydnie Trager; two great-grandchildren, Jaxon Anthony Hart and Benjamin James Trager; one sister, Jackie Johnson of Marseilles; one brother, Doug (Kathy) Trager of Ottawa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Ronald Johnson.
Pallbearers will be Anthony Caselli, Jaret Trager, Michael and Marc Machetta, Jimmy Hart, and Ron Johnson.
