George John "Butz" Marik Jr., 87, of Marseilles, passed away on Friday, October 18, 2019 at his home surrounded by family.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 25, 2019 at 12:00 noon at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home with Reverend Phil Peterson of Stavanger Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 am – 12:00 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home. Military honors will be provided by the Kasal Post Honor Guard. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery in Brookfield Township, at a later date.
He was born March 4th, 1932, in Oak Park, IL, to George J. and Marian (Volenec) Marik. On November 14, 1959, he wed Verdella E. Ploog in Charlotte, IA, who preceded him in death on July 6, 2014.
George attended Morello Grade School in Chicago and schools in Hartford, MI before moving to Charlotte, IA. He graduated in 1950 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in November of 1951. He was a Paratrooper in the 187th ARCT "Rakkasan" in the Korean War through December 29, 1955. He was a member of Seneca Kasal Post 457 and the American Legion for over sixty years.
George and Verdella lived in Iowa until 1969 when work took the family to Kenai, AK. Alaska was home until 1971 when they moved to the Seneca area. George retired from the PetroChemical business in Morris, IL. The couple made many return trips to Alaska.
George is survived by two daughters, Mari (Randy) Petges of Ransom and Tina (Ray) Craig of Seneca; one son, Shane (Dee) Marik of Marseilles; eight grandchildren, Meghan (Craig) McCoy, Jacob Petges, Michael Craig, Nick Craig, Nicole Craig, Joshua (Stacy) Marik, Alaina (Zachary) Sinnott, and Alex (fiancé, Leah Breyne) Marik; six great-grandchildren, Mason McCoy, Presley and Audrey Marik, David, Hadley, and Benjamin Sinnott; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Verdella; his parents; one brother, Bob Marik; one stepbrother, Terry Brooks; three nephews, Mark and Dean Marik along with Byrne Bielenberg; one niece, Jennifer Ploog, and one brother-in-law, Dale Ploog.
