Donald Kenneth Lockas, 95, of Ottawa, formerly of Marseilles, passed away Saturday January 14, 2023, at OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Ottawa.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Friday, January 20 at the Marseilles United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 12 p.m. Friday at the church with Reverend Megan Thompson and Reverend Kihwan Choi officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Marseilles with Military Honors.
Don was born June 4, 1927, in St. Louis, MO to Herman and Grace (Collet) Lockas. On June 17, 1951, he married Virgene Outman of Marseilles, who survives.
He was employed by L. O. F. for 40 years and retired as the superintendent of Plant 7. Don served in the U.S. Navy in WWII. He was a member of the Marseilles American Legion Post # 235 and the Marseilles VFW Post # 5506. Don served as a Board Member at Community Hospital of Ottawa, and was a member of the Marseilles Rotary Club.
Don was a member of the Marseilles United Methodist Church, he served as the Sunday School Superintendent, Board Chairman, Head Usher and was a member of the choir. He was a baseball coach for many years and was instrumental in founding the Marseilles Little League program along with a small group of local parents. He was also active in the scout program serving as Cub Master for many years. Don, a member of the Gold Crew, served as helmsman when a team of veteran sailors sailed the LST 325 back from Greece in 2001. He was involved with the extensive restoration to its current status as a floating museum moored in Evansville, IN.
He is survived by his wife, Virgene; his children, Duane (Cindy) Lockas and Dorene (Jeff) Gilbert; his daughter-in-law, Shannon Lockas; seven grandchildren, Brett (Amanda) Lockas, Kassie (Drew) McConville, Fielding (Bree) Lockas, Elizabeth (Lucas) Gilbert, Rebecca (Joe) Themig, Drew (Kaitlyn) Lockas, and Payton Lockas; four great-grandchildren, Carver, Jack, Sailer, and Brynelee; and a sister-in-law, Catherine Lockas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Dean; a twin brother, Darwin; another brother, Jim; and two sisters, Sylvia Caffee and Kay Pinney.
