Obituary

Carol Jean Phalen, 82, of Marseilles, formerly of Naperville, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2025, at her home.

Visitation will be held from 12 to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8 at Parkview Baptist Church in Marseilles. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. at the church with Pastor John Patterson officiating. Burial will be in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL. Seals-Campbell Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Carol was born June 15, 1942, in Morton, WV, to Cloyd and Pinie Lucinda (Rutledge) Pell. In 1961, she married Calvin E. Phalen Jr. of Cedar Grove, WV who preceded her in death in 2020.


She was a caregiver for many years with Little Friends. She was kind, compassionate, she was loved by all, and she fiercely loved her family. She was a faithful and involved member of Brainard Avenue Baptist Church of Countryside and Book Road Baptist Church in Naperville where she faithfully taught preschool Sunday School and worked as the church secretary. Until her passing she was a faithful and loving member of Parkview Baptist Church. She loved her Church Family and her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Carol is survived by one daughter, Jill (John) Patterson of Marseilles; her two sons, Brian (Lisa) Phalen of Hoffman Estates and Robert (Allison) Phalen of Decatur, GA; eight grandchildren, Joshua (Shawnee), Joelle, and Justine Patterson, Noah (Audren) and Samuel (Hannah) Phalen, and Oliver, Ella, and Amelia Phalen; her sister, Linda (Raymond) Matics of Pratt, WV; her brothers, Emerson Pell of Waynesboro VA and Jack (Lynn) Pell of Branson, MO; and her four-legged friend, Jax.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin, eight siblings, and her parents.
