Betty Jane Coates, 89, of Genoa, formerly of Marseilles, passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at Aperion Care DeKalb.

Services were private and burial was in Riverview Cemetery in Marseilles. Cremation rites were entrusted to Seals-Campbell Funeral Home.

Betty was born on May 9, 1936, in rural Marseilles, to Hans and Ila (Briner) Harms. On January 11, 1958, she married Ronald Coates of Marseilles, who preceded her in death in 1994.

She was employed by Nabisco as a secretary. She loved gardening, canning, cooking, and sewing.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Coates of Ottawa; her son, Dennis Coates of Genoa; one granddaughter, Samantha Coates; two great-grandchildren, Nikola and Kolton Robinson; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Coates; her sister, Edith Alsvig of Ottawa; and her extended family, Jerry (Janelle) Flieder and Theresa Hickman.

Betty is preceded in death by her mother in childhood, Ila; her parents, Hans and Jennie Harms; her husband, Ronald; two sons in infancy; one daughter, Lisa; one son, Michael; and two brothers, Ray and John Harms.
