Allen G. "Bud" Spencer, 97, of Marseilles, passed away Saturday February 3, 2018, at Aperion Care in Marseilles.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home in Marseilles with Masonic Rites at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 7, at First Congregational Church in Marseilles with Rev. Colleen Lawrence and Rev. Carl Hammer officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Marseilles with Military Honors.
Bud was born December 24, 1920, in Niagara Falls, NY to Harry C. and Mabel S. (Allen) Spencer. On August 15, 1942, he married Elizabeth Elaine Carlson of Marseilles, who preceded him in death on October 24, 2017.
Bud was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1942. He served in the 745th Tank Battalion which landed on the beaches of Normandy. He participated in five total campaigns and twelve major battles including the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest, the Battle of St. Lo, and the Battle at Mons, Belgium. Bud was later promoted to first lieutenant and ended his tour in Czechoslovakia. He was a charter member of the Marseilles American Legion Post # 235 and the Marseilles VFW Post # 5506.
Bud along with his wife, Lainie, owned and operated Spencer Insurance Agency in Marseilles for over 50 years until his retirement.
He was a member of First Congregational Church in Marseilles and in Peru. He was a member and past Worshipful Master of the Marseilles Masonic Lodge # 417 A.F. & A.M. and was a 33rd degree Mason with the Valley of Bloomington Scottish Rite, AASR, NMJ and was a member of the Medinah Shriners. Bud served on the Marseilles Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Directors for Community Hospital of Ottawa, the Board of Directors of Twin Oaks Savings Bank, and was a member of the Marseilles Rotary Club.
Bud is survived by a daughter, Sally Spencer of Marseilles; a son, Tom (Tracy) Spencer of Marseilles; seven grandchildren, Christopher Spencer, Kevin Spencer, Morgan Spencer, Elizabeth Churchhill, Erin Vonperbandt, April Clements, and Bonnie Reilly; and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Landel and Louise in infancy.
Memorials may be given to the music fund at the Marseilles or Peru First Congregational Church.
